Temperate Broadleaf and Mixed Forest Biome
The majority of Acadia National Park belongs to the Temperate Broadleaf and Mixed Forests biome, a vast ecological region that stretches across much of the eastern United States. Acadia lies near the northern edge of this biome, where hardwood forests gradually transition into Canada's boreal forests.
The park's forests contain a rich mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees. Red spruce, balsam fir, and eastern white pine dominate cooler, higher elevations, while red maple, paper birch, American beech, and northern red oak become more common in lower, sheltered valleys. This blend of tree species creates spectacular seasonal scenery, from lush green forests in summer to brilliant red, orange, and gold foliage in autumn.
These warmer and more sheltered forest zones host diverse wildlife including white-tailed deer, porcupines, coyotes, songbirds, and countless insects. The deciduous components of the park help shape its seasonal rhythms, offering vibrant foliage in the fall, lush green canopies in summer, and an explosion of wildflowers in the spring. Boreal Forest Influence

The park lies near the southern edge of the Acadian Forest Region, where northern coniferous forests gradually transition into the temperate hardwood forests of the northeastern United States.
Cool temperatures, strong coastal winds, and thin glacial soils create ideal conditions for evergreen trees such as red spruce and balsam fir, especially on the slopes of Cadillac Mountain, Sargent Mountain, and Penobscot Mountain. These conifer-dominated forests resemble the boreal landscapes found farther north in Maine and eastern Canada.
The park's boreal influence is also reflected in its wildlife. Species such as snowshoe hares, red squirrels, and several owl species are well adapted to these cool, evergreen habitats. Dense conifer forests provide year-round shelter, nesting sites, and reliable food sources for many birds and mammals.
This gradual transition between temperate hardwood forests and northern boreal forests is one of Acadia's defining ecological characteristics. Coastal-Marine Ecosystem
Acadia National Park is one of the few U.S. national parks defined so strongly by its Atlantic coastline, where land and sea constantly interact. More than 45 miles (72 km) of rugged shoreline shape a dynamic coastal environment influenced by the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Gulf of Maine.
The park’s rocky shores, sea cliffs, sandy beaches, and tidal pools form a highly productive coastal-marine ecosystem that supports a wide range of specialized life forms adapted to constant change between high and low tides.
The intertidal zone—the area between high and low tide—is one of Acadia’s most biologically active habitats. Here, organisms must survive both full submersion and complete exposure to air each day. Species such as barnacles, blue mussels, rock crabs, sea stars, periwinkle snails, sea anemones, and various types of seaweed thrive in this challenging environment by attaching firmly to rocks or adapting to changing moisture and temperature conditions.
Beyond the shoreline, offshore waters support an equally rich marine environment. Harbor seals, gray seals, harbor porpoises, and seasonally migrating whales—including humpback, fin, and minke whales—are commonly found in the region. These waters are also important feeding grounds for seabirds such as cormorants, gulls, guillemots, eiders, and terns, all of which depend on the ocean for survival and breeding success.

Freshwater Wetlands and Lakes
Acadia National Park also contains a rich network of freshwater ecosystems shaped by ancient glacial activity. These include lakes, ponds, streams, marshes, and peat bogs that are scattered throughout the forested landscape. Together, they play an important role in supporting biodiversity and maintaining water quality across the park.
The park’s peat bogs are especially distinctive. Formed in acidic, nutrient-poor conditions, these wetlands support specialized plant life such as sphagnum moss, pitcher plants, sundews, and other moisture-dependent species adapted to low-nutrient environments. Marshes and shallow ponds provide essential breeding habitats for frogs, salamanders, dragonflies, turtles, and a wide variety of aquatic insects.
Beavers are key ecosystem engineers in Acadia’s wetlands, as their dams create ponds that expand habitat diversity and support new wetland formation. Cold, clear streams and glacial lakes further enhance the ecosystem by supporting native fish such as brook trout, while providing feeding grounds for birds like the great blue heron and other water-dependent wildlife.

Mountain Summit (Alpine-like) Ecosystem
Although Acadia National Park’s mountains are not high enough to support a true alpine biome, their exposed summits create alpine-like conditions that are unique within the region. Harsh environmental factors such as thin granite soils, strong winds, frequent fog, winter ice, and intense sunlight limit tree growth and give rise to a distinctive mountain heath ecosystem at higher elevations.
Instead of dense forests, the summit areas are covered with low-growing and hardy vegetation adapted to extreme exposure. Plants such as lowbush blueberries, crowberries, mountain cranberry, heath shrubs, mosses, and colorful lichens thrive by clinging tightly to bare granite surfaces. These species are specially adapted to survive in shallow soils and rapidly changing weather conditions.
These rocky highlands also provide important nesting and hunting habitat for birds of prey. Peregrine falcons, one of North America’s fastest birds, frequently nest on steep cliff faces, while ravens, hawks, and other migrating raptors are often seen soaring above the peaks. Together, these conditions create a unique high-elevation ecosystem that stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding forests and coastal environments of Acadia.
