Plants in Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is one of the most botanically diverse protected landscapes in the northeastern United States. Located along the rugged coast of Maine, the park supports an extraordinary variety of plant life because it lies where several ecosystems meet. Dense conifer forests, northern hardwood woodlands, rocky mountain summits, freshwater lakes and wetlands, peat bogs, salt marshes, and the Atlantic coastline all occur within a relatively small area, creating ideal conditions for a remarkable diversity of vegetation.
Today, Acadia National Park is home to more than 1,100 plant species, ranging from towering evergreen trees and colorful woodland wildflowers to delicate mosses, aquatic plants, and salt-tolerant coastal vegetation. Trees and Shrubs
Acadia National Park lies at the meeting point of two major forest regions—the eastern deciduous forest and the northern boreal forest. This unique location allows both broadleaf deciduous trees and evergreen conifers to thrive side by side, creating one of the most diverse forest ecosystems in the northeastern United States.
The park's deciduous forests are dominated by trees that shed their leaves each autumn. Common species include oak, maple, sugar maple, northern red oak, paper birch, ash, beech, and sycamore. These trees provide brilliant fall colors and produce seeds, nuts, and foliage that support birds, mammals, and countless insects.
At higher elevations and in cooler areas of the park, boreal forests become more prominent. These forests are characterized by evergreen conifers such as red spruce, white spruce, balsam fir, eastern hemlock, cedar, pine, and cypress. Unlike deciduous trees, these species retain their needle-like leaves throughout the year, providing shelter and food for wildlife during every season.
Beneath the forest canopy, a rich understory of native shrubs and small plants thrives in the filtered sunlight. Common shrubs include lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), sheep laurel (Kalmia angustifolia), winterberry (Ilex verticillata), and sweet fern (Comptonia peregrina). These shrubs provide food and shelter for birds, mammals, and pollinating insects while adding another layer of diversity to Acadia's forest ecosystems.
Wildflowers
Acadia National Park supports an impressive variety of native wildflowers that bloom from spring through early fall. Woodland trails, forest openings, wetlands, and meadows come alive with colorful flowering plants that provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Among the park's most recognizable woodland wildflowers are wild lily-of-the-valley, bunchberry, goldthread, bluebead lily, and starflower. These species thrive beneath the shade of spruce and hardwood forests, where cool temperatures and moist soils create ideal growing conditions.
During late summer, the landscape becomes even more colorful as asters and goldenrods bloom across meadows and roadsides. These late-season flowers are particularly valuable because they provide one of the final nectar sources for pollinators before winter arrives.
Ferns
The cool, humid climate of coastal Maine makes Acadia National Park an excellent habitat for ferns. They are commonly found in shaded forests, along streams, on moist hillsides, and among granite boulders where humidity remains high throughout the growing season.
Some of the park's most common fern species include rock polypody, cinnamon fern, and interrupted fern.
Rock polypody is often seen growing directly on moss-covered granite rocks and cliff faces. Cinnamon fern is easily recognized by its tall cinnamon-colored fertile fronds that emerge from the center of the plant during spring. Interrupted fern gets its name from the fertile leaflets that interrupt the leafy fronds near the middle, giving it a distinctive appearance.
Like all ferns, these ancient plants reproduce through spores rather than seeds, allowing them to thrive in Acadia's cool, moist environments.
Mosses, Lichens, and Fungi
The damp forests and rocky landscapes of Acadia provide ideal conditions for mosses, lichens, and fungi. Although they are often grouped together, they belong to different biological groups.
Mosses are true non-vascular plants that absorb water directly from their surroundings. They commonly carpet rocks, fallen logs, tree trunks, and stream banks, helping retain moisture and reduce soil erosion.
Lichens are not true plants but complex partnerships between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria. They grow on rocks, trees, and exposed cliffs, adding shades of green, gray, yellow, and silver to the landscape. Because many lichens are highly sensitive to air pollution, they also serve as important indicators of environmental health.
Mushrooms and other fungi are members of the fungal kingdom rather than the plant kingdom. Beneath the forest floor, vast underground fungal networks break down dead organic matter, recycle nutrients, and form beneficial relationships with tree roots. These hidden fungi play a vital role in supporting the growth and health of Acadia's forests.
Grasses, Sedges, and Rushes
Many grass-like plants grow throughout Acadia National Park, especially in wetlands, marshes, pond edges, and moist meadows. While they may appear similar, they actually belong to three different groups: grasses, sedges, and rushes.
A simple way to distinguish them is through their stems. Sedges have triangular stems, rushes have round stems, and grasses have jointed stems.
These plants help stabilize wet soils, reduce erosion, improve water quality, and provide habitat for insects, amphibians, waterfowl, and other wildlife. Together they form an important part of the park's freshwater and wetland ecosystems.
Carnivorous Plants
Despite its cool climate, Acadia National Park is home to several fascinating carnivorous plants that have adapted to survive in nutrient-poor wetlands and peat bogs.
The most well-known species are the purple pitcher plant and the round-leaved sundew.
The purple pitcher plant traps insects inside its modified pitcher-shaped leaves, where digestive enzymes break down the prey and provide nutrients that are scarce in acidic bog soils.
The round-leaved sundew captures insects using sticky glandular hairs that cover its leaves. Once an insect becomes trapped, the leaf slowly curls around it before digestion begins.
These remarkable plants demonstrate the extraordinary adaptations that allow vegetation to survive in Acadia's unique environments.
